Farrell: To add to your point Chika, it is helpful if institutions presenting contemporary art have a contemporary art curator on staff. Less than ten years ago there was an audible scholarly outcry that to be a true Africanist you needed to have lived in an African village and conducted ethnographic fieldwork. The shift towards contemporary art needs to be met with the same research, sensitivity and consideration that the previous generation of scholars applied towards their fieldwork. As the field shifts the scholarship needs to move with it.
